While a few html pages can be assembled by anybody it takes an experienced professional to retain the interest of a browser to stay on the site for longer, be it through colours or strategic text or link placement and even page structures. The problem with finding these excellent web designers is that there is no relative meter for a good web design and recognition is rare. While different web design agencies offer creative web design at competent prices, you can never be sure that you would get the output you want because web design as a business is small and there are no standards that these designers can achieve for you to know how good they are, unlike virtually every other business. Unfortunate as it is that such a ubiquitous media entity has no design meter, the reason is that web design can be pursued by anybody with a passion and the cultural, economic and utility differences all over the world makes it impossible for anybody to track exceptionally good designs and even if they did it is impossible to judge them because of the aforementioned format differences. So it is basically up to you to assess the skill of a designer you are going to hire.

While previous works are the best place to start, creative designing can be judged through any kind of presentation designs. The product placement, pleasing colour and shape combinations with a lasting effect on the brain, innovative design principles like icon usage, de-cluttering, etc.; assimilating designs, icons and symbols to regular shapes and symbols that people see daily and still indulging in a regular dash of freshness, etc., are some basic qualities you might want check in your designer. After narrowing your candidates, be sure to test their technical skills. A great designer will be able to fit all the content he wants in the home page while still keeping the web pages below the size of 15-20kb so that fast loading of the pages can be done. After all, no browser will want to wait to see your fancy artwork. Creative web design is not just about the looks, it is about perceiving the information, understanding needs of the client and the clients business processes, not to mention thorough knowledge of obtaining traffic and internet marketing strategies.
