Infographics are visual graphical representation of data or information. This is a very useful method when it comes to explaining complicated data such as statistics using graphs. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, the graphical representation of data is always plus when trying to put across in simple words. When trying to explain complicated data, it comes real handy and most of the designers are making use of this technique effectively.
If one looks around, info graphics is everywhere. Starting from children’s books to scientific research to everyday things like traffic signals to websites. Info graphics has taken over completely. For example the traffic police can hardly keep shouting stop or go, just a simple hand symbol or a gesture is enough for people to understand the meaning. These are everyday infographics.
When coming to design and implementation part, a designer must always take these aspects seriously. Some very good tips for designers would be:
Making sure all the products of the client are displayed on the first page. It gives a better picture to the customers as to what they are looking for.
Using graphs for representing statistical data or comparison of various products.
Using simple day to day symbols for the customers to easily understand the meaning of the concepts like caution, danger, breakable etc.
Using maps to provide accurate location details. Including local landmarks is always a plus as the customers will be aware of the locality and the nearest route to the location.
Including a simulation of the product usage is a major factor. In showing a video of how the product can be used will highlight how easy it is to operate and what are all the features it has. After looking at the simulation, when the customer’s try to operate the product, from the very first usage the customers will feel it is really easy to use. This is one other way of attracting the customers.
Using graphs and other statistical methods will show customer’s that what the site is taking is a fact. Most of the designers are well aware of this technique.
All the tools cannot be applied to all kinds of products. It is the implementation which is important. A designer must be well acquainted with the product that he is designing a site for. That is when the data can be represented in an effective manner. Implementation plays a major role. For example, if the simulation design may not work for all products. A designer must take a call as to what products suit the needs so as to avoid negative publicity. All the graphical representation must be as close to the real one as possible.
